We belong to the Cowichan Watershed, which is mostly owned by Timber West and other private ownership. It stretches from the far west edge of Lake Cowichan to just past Quamichan Lake. These boundaries include the towns of Youbou, Caycuse, Honeymoon Bay, Lake Cowichan, and the city of Duncan. Our class is concerned about the extreme fluctuation in water levels that occur throughout the year, especially in the Cowichan River. Although we get plenty of rain in the winter the majority becomes run off which unable to be used as enters Cowichan Bay and mixes with sea water. Summer time droughts and water restrictions have become a regular occurrence in our valley. Ecosystems that are not able to adjust to the contrasting changes are not able to thrive and will eventually die out.
